Abstract

The present issue of Islam and Civilisational Renewal features six articles:

The first one, “The Concept of the Centre in Islam”, is by Hamza Zeghlache, an architect and anthropologist, and Professor of Islamic Architecture at Algeria’s University of Setif. His contribution explores what he calls the “complex construct of the centre” in Islam within the context of  Islamic architecture as featured in some its cities. He argues that

  • a more spiritual approach would be helpful, an approach that does not only take care of the commercial needs of shoppers and those of office workers, but rather proceeds also from the perspective of Islamic civilisation;
  • comprehensive knowledge of those spiritual foundations is to be found in the writings of the great Muslim scholars of the past, such as Yaqut and Suyuti, and would be vital when thinking of the built environment in the Islamic world today.
